Idaho Sheriff’s Deputy Hit, Killed by Patrol Car While Searching for Suspect
BONE, Idaho May 20 2020– A sheriff’s deputy in eastern Idaho is dead after another deputy hit him with his patrol car while they were trying to apprehend a woman early Monday morning.
At around 5:18 a.m. Monday, deputies from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an area of Bone Road after reports of a rollover car crash, according to a news release.
One deputy arrived and found a woman involved in the crash walking away from the scene while carrying a machete. The deputy tried to talk to her, but the woman ran away. Another deputy arrived shortly after, and the two deputies ran after the woman. It was still dark outside, the news release says.
During the chase, a third deputy arrived at the scene and accidentally struck another deputy with his patrol car, causing “severe injuries.” More emergency personnel arrived and began lifesaving efforts on the deputy, who was taken to the East Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, where he died.
In the news release, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said it is “devastated by this event.”
“This is a tragic loss for them and our family of deputies. We very much appreciate the support of our community and the law enforcement and public safety agencies surrounding us that are assisting and have reached out for support,” the agency said in the release.
The Idaho State Police will investigate the incident. The Sheriff’s Office did not name the deceased deputy.
The woman being chased was caught and taken to a local hospital for treatment, authorities said.
