3 Miles College students hospitalized after fire erupts in dormitory
Fairfield AL Aug 27 2020 Three Miles College students were taken to the hospital Tuesday night after a fire broke out in a dorm room.
The blaze erupted about 8:45 p.m. in a room on the third floor of Murchison Hall, which is a men’s dormitory. The initial reports called in to 911 were that people were trapped on the top floor and at least one male had jumped from the top floor.
Ashley Sutton, the director of public relations for Miles College, said they had not yet confirmed those reports. The fire, she said, was isolated to a single room.
The three students transported to area hospitals had minor injuries. One of those student’s injuries were related to the fire and the other two were from unrelated medical issues.
Murchison Hall was evacuated but officials did not yet know the cause of the blaze, the extent of the damage, or how many residents would be able to return to their rooms. School officials, Sutton said, had a plan in place to house any students who were displaced by the blaze.
Multiple first responder agencies were dispatched to the campus including Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, Fairfield Fire, Midfield Fire and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
