Milwaukee Community Service Officer Shot and Killed By Neighbor
Milwaukee WI Sept 9 2020 Roughly a dozen people met at the Milwaukee Police Department’s District 2 facility Friday evening to pay their respects to Naeem Sarosh, a community service officer killed Monday, and to tell officers “thank you.”
Sarosh, who worked out of District 2, was shot and killed while off duty during what investigators have called a dispute between neighbors.
Tracey Dent, an organizer with the Milwaukee Coalition Against Hate, said Sarosh “gave his life for this city.”
“Thank you for what you do for this city,” Dent said to the officers present at the vigil, on South 3rd Street and West Lincoln Avenue. “You don’t hear ‘thank you’ too often. Most of the time it’s negative. But now we need to change the narrative in this city and learn how to say, ‘thank you, for what you’re doing.’”
Milwaukee Police Capt. David Salazar called this past week “challenging” and “difficult” for the officers at District 2.
Sarosh had a “bubbly personality,” Salazar said, and was “someone that you could get to know very easily. If you knew him for five minutes you knew about his family.”
Sarosh’s brother also works in the department, “which makes it even more hard for us,” Salazar said.
Sarosh’s brother Waseem is also a community service officer, according to the Wisconsin Muslim Journal.
Salazar said officers are handling their emotions well.
