Buffalo Wild Wings employee dies, 10 others sickened after being exposed to cleaning agent
BURLINGTON, Mass. Sept 14 2020 A worker at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Massachusetts was overcome by a cleaning agent Thursday night and died.
Burlington interim Fire Chief Michael Patterson said firefighters responded to a report of a chemical reaction in the kitchen.
“What we believe happened is a worker at Buffalo Wild Wings used a cleaning agent on the floor. The cleaning agent is called Super 8. The chemical definition or identification is sodium hypochlorite. What sodium hypochlorite is, is a high concentration of chlorine,” Patterson said.
Patterson said the worker who was cleaning the floor got sick and went outside for fresh air. He said the employee who died was trying to squeegee the chemical out of the building but was overcome.
Patterson said the man was taken to Leahy Hospital, where he died. The worker’s name has not been released.
Eight other employees and two customers who were sickened by the fumes sought medical treatment on their own.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of this horrific accident at our franchise-owned sports bar,” Buffalo Wild Wings said in a statement.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was called in to investigate.
