MS. police officer, security officer, in critical condition after being shot multiple times
Jackson MS December 8 2020
A man suspected of shooting an off-duty police officer and a security guard at a Jackson nightclub was arrested Saturday, Jackson police said Sunday.
Jackson Police Department Chief Deputy Deric Hearn said 29-year-old Jaqwon Allen was taken into custody and booked into Rankin County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault. Those charges could be updated, Hearn said.
The Vicksburg Police Department identified the wounded officer as Investigator Eddie Colbert. The other man who was shot has been identified as Eric Williams.
The two men were shot around 1 a.m. Saturday near the 4th Avenue Lounge at the intersection of E. Pearl and Lamar streets in downtown Jackson.
Williams, who was working security at the lounge, was shot five times after an argument with Allen, Hearn said.
Both men remained in critical condition Sunday, he said.
Colbert was shot once in the face by a stray bullet, Hearn said.
Both gunshot victims were taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Capt. Tyree Jones with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office said the original call to dispatch said a Hinds County deputy had been shot. That was not the case, he said.
“We ask that all members of the public join us in prayers for Investigator Colbert and his family in this difficult time,” VPD said in a statement.
Colbert serves in the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. He joined VPD in 2014 after working with HCSO, according to the Vicksburg Post.
