Security guard struck by vehicle following shooting incident at UT Medical Center
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. March 11 2021Â Officials with the Knoxville Police Department said an investigation is underway after a shooting incident involving security guards at the University of Tennessee Medical Center Monday night.
According to KPD, officers responded to a shooting in a parking garage at the hospital around 8:45 p.m.
Investigators said uniformed security officers were patrolling the parking garage when a suspicious vehicle was spotted.
Security guards said they attempted to make contact with the people in the vehicle. The female driver fled the scene and struck one of the security guards, KPD said.
The two security guards then fired shots at the vehicle, according to police.
The security officer who was hit by the vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was evaluated at the UT Medical Center.
Following the incident, KPD officers discovered the suspect’s vehicle abandoned on the 1600 block of Clinch Avenue. The driver fled the scene before officers arrived.
At this time, police said no suspects are in custody and there are no known gunshot victims. Following KPD’s investigation, authorities will turn the case over to the Knox County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
