Hospital shooting suspect flees security- steals ambulance, crashes during chase

On Sunday, the Mobile Police Department received a report of an active shooter at Providence Hospital. Jamon Stegall, 36, was arrested after a police chase that ended in a crash on Interstate 10 at the Broad Street exit.
MPD said, “The male subject was taken into custody by hospital security but ran away and stole a Mobile Fire-Rescue Unit parked near the ER.”
According to Mobile Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) Spokesman, Steve Huffman, Mobile Fire-Rescue officials were at the hospital transporting a patient from the Greater Gulf State Fair when Stegall stole an ambulance unit.
“They (MFRD) went into the emergency room with their patient at around 3:40 p.m. about the same time they arrived there was a call of an active shooter at the hospital” said Huffman.
According to Huffman at 3:45 p.m. police arrived on scene and the suspect took off in the ambulance. Huffman added, “As they (police) arrived the suspect jumped in the ambulance and drove off and officers pursued him.”
Police pursued Stegall on Interstate 10. “On eastbound I-10 at the Broad Street exit the subject made an evasive maneuver to avoid a marked patrol car and overturned. No one was injured” said MPD.
In a statement requested by FOX10 Providence Hospital Vice President Operations Surgical Services Rick Metzger said, “The scene is under investigation with MPD. Everyone is safe, no one is hurt, everyone took appropriate measures.”
MFRD confirmed there were not shots fired at the hospital.
Stegall’s charges include theft of property 1st and attempt to elude.
