Morrow police, security officers commended for saving woman’s life at Southlake Mall
MORROW GA Nov 3 2017 — A woman found unresponsive in a car outside Southlake Mall has a Morrow police officer, a mall security officer and a good Samaritan to thank for saving her life.
Morrow Police Major Greg Tatroe was working part-time security for the mall the evening of Monday, Oct. 30, when a “person down” call came over his radio. Southlake Mall Security Officer Lt. Kasey Jordan had located a woman sitting in the driver’s seat of her vehicle “not responding at all to him beating and shaking the locked car,” according to the Morrow Police Department.
When Tatroe arrived on the scene at about 6 p.m., he used his police baton to break out the rear window of the woman’s car, clearing the glass away before climbing through the window to unlock the doors.
Jordan was able to pull the woman out, the Police Department reported in a post to its Facebook page, but the car began to move.
“This is when Major Tatroe realized the car was actually in gear and the female had her foot on the gas,” the department stated. Tatroe quickly slammed the car into park.
The two officers were not able to locate the woman’s pulse, and she wasn’t breathing. There were no signs of life, but while they waited for Morrow Fire Department EMS to arrive, Jordan began performing CPR on the woman. Seeing the commotion, a nearby nurse stepped in to help.
“The nurse was just basically passing by and saw what was going on, and she just stepped in and gave her credentials,” said police spokeswoman Sgt. Q. Lumpkin.
The woman then started to breathe.
“Once the nurse arrived, she was able to feel a faint pulse, so CPR was stopped,” Lumpkin said. The woman was transported to an area hospital.
The Police Department thanked Tatroe, Jordan and the nurse for their life-saving efforts and plans to award all three with the city’s Life Saving Award. It will be the second award for Jordan, an officer with the Universal Protection Service, who helped to save a mall patron’s life last year after the patron had a massive heart attack.
The award is expected to be presented at an upcoming Morrow City Council meeting.
