Person arrested in shooting, robbery near Palomar Medical Center Escondido
ESCONDIDO, Calif. July 18 2021— Escondido police arrested one person Friday after a robbery and gunshot were reported near Palomar Medical Center Escondido, authorities said.
Hospital officials said no shots were fired on the grounds after police reported a suspect who allegedly stole a nurse’s purse and ran off when confronted by security.
Escondido police say the suspect then fired what sounded like a gunshot near the hospital. They announced an arrest shortly before 7 p.m.
Hospital officials say surveillance video showed the suspect stealing the staff member’s bag. The hospital then contacted Escondido police.
A police officer who was already onsite when the call came in contacted the individual outside on the sidewalk in front of the hospital, Palomar Health said.
No injuries were reported in the incident as the investigation remains ongoing.
Hospital officials say they have recovered the employee’s backpack and some items. It is not known if something was missing from the backpack.
