2 arrests at protest outside N.J. restaurant where security officer, K-9 charged at man
Deptford NJ Aug 3 2021
Two people were charged with disorderly conduct at a protest Friday outside a restaurant in Deptford where, one day earlier, a private security officer with a K-9 dog charged at another man in the restaurant’s parking lot.
The confrontation Thursday, outside Adelphia Restaurant, was captured via 15-second video and posted on social media. Protesters rallied outside the restaurant after the dispute, telling patrons not to dine at the business.
In announcing the two arrests at the protest, Deptford police said it had completed its investigation into what happened in the incident involving the security officer and dog, and had forwarded the findings to the Gloucester County prosecutor’s office.
Police did not say whether additional charges had been filed or recommended.
The video posted to social media Thursday showed a man getting up from sitting on a curb, going off-screen, and then another man in a uniform charging at him with a dog. Shouts could be heard in the video and someone yelled “white p—y” at the man in uniform before he ran toward the man, who appeared to be Black.
Deptford police said the man with the dog is a private security officer contracted by the restaurant, and that neither he nor the dog are with the police department.
Police have not named the man or the security company.
A woman who answered the phone at Adelphia Restaurant Saturday morning said no manager or supervisor was on hand to answer questions and she did not know who the manager was. NJ Advance Media was transferred to a voicemail at the restaurant.
The woman who posted the video of the altercation said on Facebook the man being charged at was her son. She said the dispute started when her son was asked to remove his hat at the restaurant.
Another video she posted showed the two men struggling over the dog’s leash. The woman also posted photographs of her son’s injuries, which included a bloody puncture on his body.
