Teacher, security officer make the grade for Montgomery Public Schools
Montgomery County AL Nov 6 2017 One ensures student safety, and the other engages students with exciting lessons. Both are being rewarded for their hard work at Montgomery Public Schools.
The school district recognized longtime teacher Tamara Card and security guard Nicole Huffman as its Employees of the Month during the Oct. 24 Board of Education meeting.
Card is a teacher at Flowers Elementary and has been teaching for 18 years. She has an undergraduate degree from Auburn University Montgomery and her masters for Troy University Montgomery.
When crafting a lesson, Card keeps in mind her students’ different learning styles so she can meet all their needs. She finds ways to extend teaching outside the classroom and invigorates her reading classes with project-based learning.
Flowers Principal Ethel Barnes said working with Card is “rewarding and inspirational.”
“Her enthusiasm is contagious,” Barnes said. “She demonstrates exceptional teaching ability every day.”
Huffman is a security guard at Park Crossing High who arrives early each day to ensure that students, buses and parents arrive and depart safely. Then, throughout the day, she works closely with administrators, staff and law enforcement to keep the campus safe. She also spends many hours a week at extracurricular events.
The Security Department hired her in 2009, and she has been at Park Crossing since it opened in 2013. She previously worked at Lanier High and McKee Middle.
MPS Chief of Security Bobby Crew said Huffman sets an excellent example for students with her professional demeanor, appearance and hard work.
“She is a great asset to Montgomery Public Schools,” Crew said.
