Patterson NJ may allow off-duty police to provide school security
PATERSON, N.J. October 21 2021— One week after a lockdown at a Paterson high school over reports of a student with a gun, the New Jersey city’s school district will meet Wednesday night, Oct. 20, to vote on whether or not to allow off-duty police officers to serve as school security.
With an increase I school violence locally and nationwide, the need for police presence is once again putting the focus back on SROs in school.
The move comes amid a serious shortage of school safety officers in Paterson and other cities across the country.
Mayor Andre Sayegh said they are exploring using off-duty police officers to provide school security.
