Tulsa security guard involved in gun show shooting arrested
Tulsa OK May 11 2017 Prosecutors allege that a Tulsa County Assessor’s Office employee already charged in connection with inadvertently shooting a fellow gun show security guard in April wasn’t properly credentialed to be a security guard himself.
The Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday filed a second misdemeanor charge against Brian Keith Pounds — violation of Oklahoma Security Guard and Private Investigator Act.
The filing alleges that Pounds was an armed security guard at the Wanenmacher’s Tulsa Arms Show but that his Armed Security Guard license expired in 2004 and hadn’t been renewed.
Pounds, who had been charged with reckless conduct with a firearm, has been an appraiser with Tulsa County since 2003. Pounds also is a reserve officer for the Collinsville Police Department and is a former Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy.
Prosecutors accuse Pounds, 48, of handling a .22-caliber pistol in a reckless manner, wounding Ricky Lamont Treadwell.
A probable cause affidavit states Pounds was working as a security officer at the main entrance to the gun show on April 1 at Expo Square when he inspected the weapon but failed to clear it while pointing it over Treadwell’s head. Pounds inadvertently discharged a round into a concrete wall, with the bullet ricocheting and embedding in Treadwell’s middle finger.
Pounds’ arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
Treadwell, a former sergeant with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, declined to press charges. However, the District Attorney’s Office decided to charge Pounds on April 7 after receiving the case’s investigative materials.
Organizers of the gun show encourage open and concealed carry of firearms but require that guns be unloaded upon entering the venue, according to the show’s website.
Records previously obtained by the Tulsa World show that the Sheriff’s Office terminated Pounds’ reserve deputy and part-time employment statuses in November 2005, “for the good of the office” following a hearing.
He was suspended from the reserve program in February 2004 but was reinstated in September of that year after he wrote a letter saying he “had much time to reflect on the situation that got me here” and asked then-Sheriff Stanley Glanz to allow him to return.
Neither item of correspondence, however, details the circumstances of Pounds’ sanctions.
A Sheriff’s Office spokesman said Pounds became a Tulsa County reservist in April 2002.
