An off-duty NYPD officer who was working a private security job has shot a career criminal who stabbed another man during a squabble outside an Upper West Side Duane Reade early Friday, according to authorities and police sources.
The 42-year-old suspect was fighting with a 66-year-old man inside the drug store at Broadway and West 94th Street around 7 a.m. when the cop who was working off-duty as a security guard told them to go outside, cops and the sources said.
The fighting continued outside, where the suspect stabbed the older man in the left arm and ran off, authorities said.
The off-duty 34-year-old officer then chased the suspect, cops said.
At that point, the man lunged at the officer with the knife, police said.
The off-duty cop then fired at the armed man, hitting him in the hip and arm, authorities said.
The suspect was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition, with charges pending.
The older man was taken to the same hospital, also in stable condition.
The officer, who has been with the department for nine years, was taken to Mount Sinai East Hospital for an evaluation, cops said.
The suspect has more than 40 prior arrests — including assault busts in Midtown from 2007 and 2004, police sources said.
