JACKSONVILLE, Fla. October 12 2022
Police say a man carrying a large ax tried to enter a Florida elementary school and was shot by an officer.
First Coast News reports the suspect tried to gain entry through two entrances at Ruth Upson Elementary School on Friday.
The school was placed on lockdown, and when the man attempted to leave campus, a school safety assistant followed him.
Police followed the man to a nearby church and shouted commands to drop the weapon.
He refused and was shot once by one of the officers, police said. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.
Police later identified the man as 37-year-old David Hurley, according to First Coast News. He remained in critical condition at the hospital on Saturday.
Hurley faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, trespassing on school property with a firearm or other weapon, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, first responder or security guard.
