Michigan Police, Border Agents Stop Armed Man in Infant Abduction
DETROIT MI October 13 2022—U.S. Border Patrol agents and officers from multiple police departments worked together to stop an infant abduction this week.
The ordeal began at approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday when agents from the Gibraltar station learned that officers from the Flat Rock Police Department were pursuing a suspect who had allegedly abducted a child while armed with a handgun.
The child’s mother had been assaulted in the process of the abduction, officials said. During the pursuit, the Flat Rock PD vehicle was disabled, and no other law enforcement were in the area to assist, so the agents stepped in.
When they arrived at the vehicle’s location, they noticed two subjects seated in a different vehicle stopped behind it, which was later identified as a good Samaritan who thought he was assisting a stranded motorist.
The subject in the passenger seat was holding an infant and was identified as the suspect in the abduction, police said.
The agents, Wyandotte Police Department and Michigan State Police took both subjects into custody without incident.
“Our strong, established partnerships allowed for seamless communication and quick resolution to this dangerous situation. I am amazed every day by the work of Border Patrol agents and our partners to protect our communities,” said Detroit Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Danley.”
The infant was cared for by an agent until the baby’s grandmother and other family members arrived a short time later.
The suspect was arrested by Flat Rock officers and has been charged with kidnapping, fleeing and eluding and child endangerment.
