Cleveland security officer almost shot while subduing armed robber
CLEVELAND, Ohio Dec 9 2017— A security officer at a Cleveland Family Dollar store was almost shot Wednesday night as he wrestled a gun away from an armed robber and held him there until police arrived, police say.
Demario Bogarty, 24, is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault in the incident that happened about 8 p.m. at the Family Dollar on East 93rd Street near Union Avenue.
His bond was set at $25,000 at his Friday arraignment, court records show.
Bogarty acted suspiciously in the store before approaching the counter, asking for cigarettes, and flashing a pistol, the report says.
Bogarty pointed the gun at a clerk and said “open the drawer before it gets bloody in here,” the report says. He then approached the security guard and demanded his cellphone, the report says.
The security guard hit his arm in an attempt to get the gun away as Bogarty walked back to the checkout counter, the report says. The pair wrestled over the weapon and fell to the floor, where they continued to struggle.
The security officer lost his grip on Bogarty’s arm and Bogarty managed to fire the gun, the report says. The bullet almost struck the security guard’s head and was fired into the floor, the report says.
Another man ran from the back of the store to help security officer. The two men held Bogarty down until officers arrived to arrest him, the report says.
Police asked that Bogarty be held on a high bond because he fired a gun at his girlfriend earlier in the day, court records say. He also threatened the robbery victims as police arrested him, records say.
