Man shot by security guard at Baltimore Royal Farms clinging to life
BALTIMORE MD November 1 2022 A man shot by a private security guard outside a Royal Farms in Southwest Baltimore this weekend is clinging to life at a hospital, police and witnesses said.
Police originally reported he had died, but later said the victim was in “grave condition.”
Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the Royal Farms in the 1800 block of Washington Boulevard after a report of a shooting.
There, officers found the 26-year-old victim who had been shot in the head.
Witnesses said a security guard for the store was the shooter and she was trying to stop a thief. An incident report was unavailable Monday and police provided few details.
This is the second time a security guard has been involved in a shooting in less than two weeks. On Oct. 21, police said a guard shot a suspected shoplifter in the face. Police said the victim attempted to stab the guard with a syringe.
Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to call detectives at 410-396-2100 or contact the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-LOCKUP7.
Meanwhile, these incidents are now shedding light on a troubling trend. At this time last year, police had responded to 202 convenience store robberies. This year, they’ve been sent to 350, a 73% increase.
FOX 45 tried pressing Police Commissioner Michael Harrison on annual crime stats at a public hearing last Wednesday, but were denied an interview.
Monday, FOX 45 followed up asking the department specifically how they plan to address the increase in convenience store crime. We have yet to hear back.
In addition to that, Baltimore police reported that 282 people had been killed in homicides so far this year, a .71 percent increase compared with the same time period last year. Also Monday, Baltimore police reported 608 nonfatal shootings so far this year, a 1 percent increase compared with the same time period last year.
