MD. Security Officer Faces Attempted Murder Charges
BALTIMORE MD Nov 2 2022 A security guard who critically wounded a belligerent customer at a Southwest Baltimore Royal Farms over the weekend is now facing attempted murder charges, according to the charging documents.
Kanisha Spence, 43, of Baltimore, faces charges of attempted murder, assault and weapons violations.
Police said the victim, 26-year-old Marquis Powell, entered the Royal Farms in the 1800 block of Washington Boulevard around 3 a.m. Sunday.
An earlier statement by police said that she suspected him of shoplifting.
At some point, Spence asked Powell to leave the store, but Powell became frustrated and belligerent, the document said.
When Powell approached Spence, she drew her weapon and pointed at Powell’s head, the documents said.
Powell and a woman then left the store.
Minutes later, Powell returned to the store, causing another confrontation. As Powell was being restrained by the woman in the store vestibule, Spence shot him in the head. the documents said.
Spence initially told police that Powell lunged at her, causing the shooting. Police disputed Spence’s account, saying that Powell merely moved toward her.
“Other than Mr. Powell ‘lunging’ at Ms. Spence, there was no other indication that she feared for her safety at any time during this interaction,” the officers wrote in the charging document.
Spence is currently being held at Central Booking and Intake Center in downtown Baltimore.
Powell remains hospitalized in critical condition. Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting because of the severity of Powell’s injuries.
Spence is an employee of the Maximum Protective Security Agency.
In the charging documents, Powell is not accused of taking anything from the Royal Farms store.
This is the second time a security guard has been involved in a shooting in less than two weeks. On Oct. 21, police said a security guard shot a suspected shoplifter in the face.
Police said the victim attempted to stab the security officer with a syringe.
The security guard was not charged in that case.
