Sheriff’s office cancels daytime patrols
RED BLUFF CA November 10th, 2022 The Tehama County Sheriff’s Department, beginning Nov. 20, will suspend daytime patrol services to its designated areas of responsibility within Tehama County due to severe staffing shortages.
The department will maintain patrol services during the nighttime hours, according to a press release issued Monday evening by the department. Deputies assigned to night shift patrol will triage and respond to the open, non-emergency calls for service that come in throughout the day.
Sheriff’s officials have met with officials from the California Highway Patrol to discuss the parameters of emergency response within Tehama County. While the final details are still underway, the CHP will respond to life-threatening emergencies during the hours the sheriff’s department will not provide patrol services.
This reduction of services is necessary to manage a catastrophic staffing shortage throughout the agency, the release said.
Over the past several years, the department has had difficulties recruiting and retaining employees, which has been directly linked to pay disparities, the release said. A drastic rise in attrition and the inability to present enticing recruitment efforts has resulted in an unprecedented staffing shortage.
Most recently, staffing shortages in the custody division have forced the department to reassign deputies from the operations division to fill vacancies within the courts and jail facility, the release said.
The department is committed to continuing all recruitment efforts and working towards restoring patrol services when staffing levels permit, the release said.
