Former employee accused of stealing nearly $50K from Tennessee fire department
Marshal County TN January 17, 2022 A man who served as treasurer on the board at a volunteer fire station in Middle Tennessee for more than 30 years is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the department.
The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office says Fred Haley is facing a 95-count indictment for allegedly retaining cash proceeds from fundraisers totaling $48,310.83.
An investigation found Haley forged the signatures of cosigners on at least four checks that were written to Haley and his personal business. Investigators also discovered he would often request the second signatory to sign blank fire department checks.
Haley, who was removed from the board in July 2022, paid the department back $437.35. He still owes $47,873.48.
A grand jury has indicted Haley on 90 counts of theft of property under $1,000, four counts of forgery, and one count of theft of property over $10,000.
