San Jose security officer shoots Walgreen robbery suspect
SAN JOSE CA Dec 20 2017 — A would-be robber shot by a security guard at a downtown San Jose drugstore has died, authorities said.
The man, who has not been identified, passed away Tuesday afternoon at a local hospital, according to police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten. She said the case is now being handled by the police homicide unit, but police did not release other details.
Officers raced to the Walgreens at South First and West Santa Clara streets at about 8:23 p.m. Monday after receiving word that a person had been shot at the store. They arrived to find an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound, said San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia.
The man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, Garcia said.
Garcia said a preliminary investigation revealed that the man was “attempting to commit a robbery inside the store” when a security guard opened fire and wounded him.
The security guard is cooperating with the investigation, Garcia said.
Tuesday morning, a Walgreens employee said the store manager was not available and would not be commenting on the shooting.
The shooting closed Santa Clara Street between Market and Second streets for more than two hours.
