Baltimore security officer shoots man during confrontation
Baltimore MD March 20 2023
Baltimore City police are investigating a shooting in Fells Point where they said a security guard shot a man.
According to police, the shooting happened shortly after closing time early Sunday morning along a major strip of bars in Fells Point. It’s the same area that’s seen a major uptick in violence in recent years.
Officers responded to South Broadway at 2:20 a.m. to investigate a shooting inside an establishment. 11-News has confirmed it happened at Pie in the Sky pizza shop.
“It’s really upsetting. It’s really sad and scary that it happened here,” Fells Point resident Sara Naselsky said.
Officials said once on the scene, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said a security guard and the man got into a fight before the shooting, and the guard shot the man.
“If he was doing his job, protecting himself, because it is dangerous around here, at (these) times, especially at night on the weekends, so I think he was just protecting himself,” Fells Point resident Miles Thomas, said. “I hope the person’s ok that got shot.”
“The last few years, it’s been getting (really) bad,” Fells Point resident Gary Cowin said.
South Broadway has been the center of violence in Fells Point over the last year. Just doors down from this incident was the scene of a homicide in the fall. The same spot saw a double shooting over the summer, and last spring, a teenager was charged with murdering a bouncer in the area.
Marco Nunez was killed while trying to break up a fight around the corner, outside Riptide Bar.
“It’s upsetting because (you) know I’ve been here a long time, and Fells Point used to be very peaceful. Something’s (got to) happen, (you know),” Cowin said.
The manager of the pizza shop was not available for comment and police said this is an ongoing investigation.
