Miss. Police Officer Killed, Another Wounded in Hostage Standoff
Brandon MS June 2, 2023
Two Mississippi police officers were shot—one fatally—during a hostage situation-turned-standoff Thursday that ended when the suspect was killed.
Brandon police responded to a domestic disturbance at a home at around 1:45 a.m., and Chief Wayne Dearman said officers were shot at as they arrived, WAPT-TV reports. One officer was struck by the initial gunfire and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The suspect barricaded himself inside the home with a hostage, but a SWAT unit was able to enter the house and rescue the hostage after about an hour. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident, including Brandon police and the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office.
Shots rang out again at around 9:30 a.m. During that final confrontation, a Madison police officer and the suspect were shot and killed.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
