Louisville security officer shoots man at Denny’s restaurant
Louisville, Ky. Jan 1 2018 Officials are investigating an early morning shooting on New Year’s Eve that involved a Metro Corrections officer.
It happened just after 2 a.m. at the Denny’s on Eastern Parkway near the University of Louisville. According to officials, and off-duty Metro Corrections officer, who was working security at the restaurant, was alerted to a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot.
The officer said he witnessed criminal activity and was able to get the car door open, but that’s when the man put the car in reverse and allegedly tried to run over the officer.
Reports indicate the officer fired one shot, striking the suspect, but he was able to drive away from the scene.
Shortly after, police spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect’s car. Officers followed it, but the driver crashed the car and ran away.
Police with the K9 Unit were able to track him down, but he turned out not to be associated with the original shooting investigation. He was arrested, though, because the car he was driving turned out to be stolen.
Later that morning, the suspect turned up at Audubon Hospital on Poplar Level Road. He had surgery and has since been transferred to University Hospital.
Officials with LMPD said the suspect was conscious and alert. The LMPD Public Integrity Unit and Metro Corrections are investigating, as is protocol in cases such as this.
The officer involved had some bumped and bruises but reported no serious injuries. He has been with Metro Corrections for more than 15 years and has worked security at that Denny’s for about a decade.
