St. Helena Parish, La. September 13, 2023
One student is dead, and two others were injured after a school shooting at St. Helena College & Career Academy on Tuesday afternoon, according to St. Helena Parish Sheriff Nat Williams.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. as school was being dismissed and students were still on the Greensburg campus.
The suspected shooter, a 14-year-old male student, has been arrested, Williams said.
“This is being investigated by state police and the Sheriff’s Office,” Williams said.
The St. Helena Parish School District announced via Facebook on Tuesday evening that school would be canceled until Friday, as well as this week’s football game and School Board meeting.
St. Helena College & Career Academy was scheduled to play Amite at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Helena Central High School.
The district said it will have an official statement on the shooting soon.
Gov. John Bel Edwards took to social media Tuesday evening calling the shooting an “awful act.” Edwards also spoke on having more policy discussions about ending gun violence in the state.
No motive for the shooting has been given.
The school did not comment on whether or not a security or school resource officer was on campus at the time of the shooting.
