Man Found Guilty Of Killing Security Guard During Armed Carjacking
Prince George County Maryland September 29 2023 A 26-year-old man has been found guilty of killing a 23-year-old security officer during an armed carjacking.
During the trial, which wrapped up with a verdict Tuesday, Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel Kim maintained that the killing was premeditated by Desmond Mbah, 26.
On Feb 11, 2021, Mbah left his home at 11660 Severn Road, took a bus and went to an apartment complex in the 5400 block of 54th Ave. in Riverdale Park. That’s where Riyadh Al Janabi was working as a security guard and sitting in his vehicle at the time he was killed, according to court documents.
Prosecutors said Mbah “ambushed” Al Janabi and shot into the car, hitting Al Janabi twice in the face and killed him. Then Mbah took off in the victim’s vehicle. When police arrived, they found Al Janabi wounded and lying on the pavement. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
“This took a lot of effort,” Kim said during his closing argument. “The defendant specifically went to the parking lot to find his victim. This was a targeted attack to kill Riyadh Al Janabi and take his vehicle.”
Mbah was convicted of first-degree murder, armed carjacking, use of a firearm in a crime of violence and carrying a handgun on his person in a public place. He’s scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 19.
