1 Philadelphia Police Officer Killed, Another Wounded in Airport Garage Shooting
Philadelphia PA October 13, 2023
A Philadelphia police officer was killed and another wounded when the two tried to thwart a car break-in at the airport late Thursday.
The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. when the two officers were parking in the garage before beginning their shift, The Associated Press reports. That’s when they saw several people trying to break into a vehicle.
When officers confronted the group, the suspects began shooting. One officer was struck several times, and the other officer was wounded in the arm.
Both officers were rushed to the hospital, and one officer died from his injuries just after 11:30 p.m. The other officer was in stable condition.
According to police, the suspects fled the garage in a stolen vehicle. An 18-year-old man with gunshot wounds—described by interim Police Commissioner as being “very similar to the suspect description”—was dropped off at a hospital and died of his injuries.
Police would not confirm if the officers had fired shots. According to KYW-TV, a weapon from one of the officers was missing.
“A numb, numb moment for us, to again encounter something like this,” said Stanford. “We just had three officers shot last week. And then this tonight, so you can imagine what we feel. We can imagine what this department is going through. And quite frankly, how the city should be feeling.”
Police have not released the name of the slain officer, but he was a 50-year-old, 22-year veteran of the department. The wounded 60-year-old officer, who also wasn’t identified, has been with the department for 20 years.
