6th Grader Killed, 5 Others Injured in Iowa School Shooting; Assailant Dead
Perry IA January 5th, 2024 A sixth-grade student was killed and five other people were injured during a shooting at Perry High School in Iowa on Thursday morning, authorities said at a Thursday afternoon press conference.
The shooter, a 17-year-old student at the school identified as Dylan Butler, was discovered dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as authorities arrived.
Four of the five injured people are students and one is an administrator, authorities said. Of the injured victim, one was in critical condition with non-life threatening injuries while the other four were stable.
Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said Thursday morning that authorities got an alert about the shooting at about 7:37 a.m.
According to Infante, the shooting took place before school hours, meaning there were relatively few people at the school, which he said limited the number of victims.
Authorities said the shooter was armed with a shotgun and a handgun. An improvised explosive device was found at the school, which was rendered safe by responding law enforcement.
Authorities would not comment on a motive, but said the shooter’s made social media posts before the shooting that will be part of the investigation.
Linda Andorf, board president for the Perry Community School District, told NBC, “It is horrendously awful.”
She added, “People need to figure out their life. This is just disgusting. It’s terrible.”
