Fultondale Alabama February 16, 2024
An Alabama law enforcement officer took his own life Thursday while attending a training class in Fultondale, authorities said.
Fultondale police Sgt. John Tanks said the class, which was on sex offender investigations, was taking place at the Fultondale Event Center on Hawkins Lane.
The session broke for lunch and the officer, who worked outside of Jefferson County, went to lunch with three other people.
When they returned to the event center shortly before 1 p.m., three of the officers got out of the vehicle to walk back inside the building. As they did so, they heard a gunshot.
The officer was found dead inside the vehicle with what authorities said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The officer’s name has not been released. Authorities are working to notify relatives.
