Cumberland Mall shooting injures 1 after drug deal
Vineland NJ Jan 11 2018 One man was shot in the leg during a drug deal that turned into a robbery in the Cumberland Mall parking lot, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Vineland officers were sent at 6:07 p.m. Monday to the Boscov’s department store parking lot for a report of a gunshot victim, who indicated he was the victim of a robbery and had been shot in the leg, police said.
The victim, a 29-year-old city man, told police he arrived at the mall on South Delsea Drive intending to purchase narcotics, police said.
According to the victim, the other person, who is believed to be male, attempted to rob him as he sat in the passenger’s side of a vehicle. During the transaction, the accused stole cash from the man and shot him one time in the leg, police said.
The victim got out of the vehicle and called police. He was later taken to Inspira Medical Center Vineland and had surgery on Tuesday, police said.
Police said the victim and the accused made an arrangement to meet at the mall to conduct a narcotics transaction, police said.
When notified of the incident, mall management instituted security measures to protect customers, police said.
Officers are reviewing surveillance video and will be interview the victim again, police said. Detective Nelson Gonzalez is investigating.
