Santa Monica Security Officer Stabbed by Homeless Person
Santa Monica CA December 3, 2024
A private security guard received a minor injury Thursday morning when a homeless man sleeping in a downtown parking structure slashed at the guard.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), the assault occurred at about 12:45am when a member of the Good Guard security team approached a homeless subject who was sleeping in Parking Structure 2 at 1235 2nd Street.
SMPD said the security guard was doing his job when he woke the person and asked him to leave the structure. The individual, described as a male in his 30s, became angry and struck the guard in his hand with a sharp object, causing a laceration. The guard was not sure what the object was. The suspect fled the location and is outstanding. This incident will be investigated as an Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
“The SMPD is grateful for the dedication of the employees of Good Guard,” said Lt. Erika Aklufi. “Their presence in the parking structures and other public buildings in the downtown area has significantly improved the safety of those locations in the overnight hours. We wish the guard a speedy recovery.”
The Good Guard company has the contract for security in the downtown parking structures while Legion Corporation was brought on last year to patrol the rest of the area. Since December, Legion has reported two assaults on its employees, neither resulting in serious injury.
