Man tired running down Tennessee Medical Center security officers
Knoxville TN Jan 23 2018 A Seymour man is accused of driving away from a traffic stop and nearly striking two University of Tennessee Medical Center security officers with his pickup truck before crashing into a vehicle and running away.
Knoxville police arrested 26-year-old Shawn Daniel Scarbro about 4 a.m. Sunday after a brief foot chase, according to court records.
He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault against the security officers, two counts of evading arrest, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of driving without a license.
UT Med security officers tried to stop Scarbro’s pickup about 3:45 a.m. Sunday. Scarbro had been acting “suspicious” in a parking garage, said Jim Ragonese, head of public relations for UT Med.
Scarbro drove away, crashing into the front end of a UT Med cruiser and nearly striking two officers in the process, according to an arrest warrant.
He later told police his goal was to “run down officers to get away,” the warrant reads.
“I don’t believe that he struck our officers,” Ragonese said.
Shortly after leaving UT Med, Scarbro crashed into a vehicle on Alcoa Highway.
The driver of that vehicle, who was not hurt, told Knoxville police she had been traveling north “when a blue Nissan Titan pickup truck, traveling at a high rate of speed, had sideswiped them,” according to an arrest warrant.
She told police the driver of the pickup “jumped out and ran” toward Governor John Sevier Highway, where officers found Scarbro walking, according to the warrant.
After being given commands, Scarbro ran and was caught, the warrant states.
Scarbro was being held Monday in the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility in lieu of $7,500 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 31.
Ragonese said UT Med officials don’t know why Scarbro drove away from officers.
