Man tries to smoke cigarette in judicial center, is arrested for drugs
WHITLEY CO., Ky. March 22 2018 Officials arrested a man Monday after they found drugs belonging to him at the Whitley County Judicial Center.
Court security officers (CSO) saw Michael David Young, 34, walk into the judicial center while smoking a cigarette.
When the officers told Young tobacco was not allowed inside, he left and went to some nearby shrubs. Young then came back into the building for an appearance in circuit court.
The CSOs checked the shrubs Young went over to and found a hypodermic needle containing a clear liquid. The circuit court judge was notified, who then had Young take a drug test.
When Young was searched, CSOs found a small flashlight holding marijuana. Officials say Young admitted the needle was his and that he was using drugs.
The judge sentenced Young to six months in prison. Young was charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication. He was also wanted on Laurel County charges. He was taken to the Whitley County Detention Center.
“Court Security Officers are on the front line of protecting and maintaining order in and around the judicial center. What they do isn’t always as ‘newsworthy’ as other sheriff’s department activities, but their work is praiseworthy. Please join me in recognizing our CSOs for their work,” said Whitley County Sheriff Colan J. Harrell.
