Security guard helps friend rob Florida business
Ocala FL June 7 2018 Joseph Wayne Crenshaw, 34, and his alleged accomplice, Dennis Wayne Waters, 32, were arrested on the charge of robbery with a firearm.
Dennis W. Waters wasn’t working early Monday morning at his job as a security guard at the Lucky Panda Internet Café in Summerfield.
But Marion County sheriff’s detectives say he did do a job — ringing the buzzer and holding the door — for a masked gunman who robbed the place.
Waters, 32, and Joseph Wayne Crenshaw, 34, both of Summerfield, were arrested Monday on suspicion of robbery with a firearm. Crenshaw also faces the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
At 3:35 a.m., deputies were notified about a robbery in the internet café at 14335 S. U.S. 441, Unit No. 104.
Employees told investigators Waters came to the door and pressed the buzzer, according to an arrest report. Witnesses said he opened the door and waited for Crenshaw, who entered the café wearing a wolf mask and carrying a handgun.
Then Waters went behind the building. Crenshaw demanded cash from the employees, who gave him money. Then he left. He was last seen going behind the building.
Searching for the robbers, deputies found some of their clothing and learned where they could find both men.
Deputies stopped a 2003 Ford truck near Sunset Harbor Road. In it they found four people, including Crenshaw and Waters, who deputies said were sweaty.
When the four got out of the truck, a .380-caliber handgun fell to the ground. Deputies said it was similar to the firearm described by witnesses.
The other two people in the truck told deputies they were at a residence when Crenshaw and Waters asked for a ride. One said Waters wanted to go back to the home to get his gun, and the driver said they returned for it.
Inside the vehicle, deputies found a bag containing cash and clothing that they believe Waters had been wearing.
When deputies tried to interview Crenshaw, he declined to talk.
Waters at first did not want to talk. He later told detectives he is a security guard at the business, but was off duty during the incident. He said had been riding his bike in a nearby neighborhood.
Both men were then arrested.
State records show that Crenshaw was released from prison in March 2016 after serving time for grand theft and commercial fraud.
