Virginia Beach nurse accused of stealing $24K worth of jewelry from 82-year-old patient
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. July 1 2018 A Virginia Beach woman is out $24,000 worth of jewelry and police believe one of her nurses is to blame.
Ann Kellam is 82 years old. She has some health issues and relies heavily on her in-home nurses.
So when she learned that one of the people supposed to be helping her allegedly stole from her, she was heartbroken.
It hasn’t been an easy few years for Kellam. She said, “I haven’t been able to walk without my walked in three years.”
She relies on a team of in-home nurses, trusting them with her care until one allegedly betrayed her.
“I tell you what, I feel really bad for her, that she thought she could do that to somebody who was good to her,” said Kellam.
Back in April, Kellam couldn’t find some of her favorite jewelry, specifically a ring holder with her wedding rings, a diamond bracelet, and Rolex watch.
She said, “We knew it had to be someone who has access to my bedroom.”
Court paperwork says police found the rings and bracelet in a pawn shop. They arrested and charged one of Kellam’s nurses, Tahiyyah Sherwood, outside of Kellam’s home.
Kellam said, “When she pulled up in her car, they went over to her and they pulled their car in front of hers so she couldn’t get away.”
The jewelry Sherwood is accused of taking is worth more than $24,000.
However, Kellam says it’s not about the money. “What’s important is it hurts to think that somebody betrayed you,” she said.
Kellam is waiting to get the rings and bracelet back from police, but the watch hasn’t turned up.
“It was given to me by my husband and he’s dead. I would love to get it back,” said Kellam. “Someday, I would love to pass it on to my daughter, my granddaughter.”
Sherwood is charged with four counts of obtaining property by false pretense and one count of grand larceny. Her preliminary hearing is set for August 10.
