Indiana man pleads guilty to robberies-shooting security guard
CROWN POINT IN July 4 2018 — A Gary man charged in a string of stick-ups two years ago at businesses in Gary and Merrillville pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of armed robbery and one count of attempted armed robbery.
Stephen T. Spivey entered a plea agreement Monday in Lake Criminal Court. He agreed to plead guilty to two counts of armed robbery and one count of attempted armed robbery, all level 3 felonies.
Per the terms of the plea agreement, Spivey, 23, will face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison at an Aug. 6 sentencing hearing.
Spivey pleaded guilty to the attempted armed robbery Dec. 30, 2015, of a One Stop Mart in the 700 block of West 45th Avenue in Gary. Spivey allegedly fired a gun at the cashier during the attempted robbery, court records state.
He admitted he also committed the armed robbery that same day of a King Gyro in the 5500 block of Broadway in Merrillville. In that robbery, he allegedly pointed a silver gun at the forehead of an employee, emptied a cash register and fled the restaurant in a Pontiac Bonneville, records state.
Finally, he pleaded guilty to the armed robbery Jan. 1, 2015, of a Boost Mobile phone store in the 2400 block of Broadway. Spivey allegedly committed that robbery with two accomplices, though he was the only person charged in the crime, records state.
The state agreed to dismiss two other criminal cases against Spivey as part of his plea agreement.
He was charged in one of those cases with attempted murder on allegations he shot a security guard during an armed robbery Jan. 26, 2015, at ABC Cellular phone store in the 4200 block of Broadway in Gary. In the other case, he allegedly attempted to rob a man Jan. 10, 2015, at a Clark gas station near 45th Avenue and Broadway in Gary.
