Two security guards killed during Eastern Cape cash-in-transit heist
South Africa July 7 2018 Two security guards have been killed in the Eastern Cape after thieves opened fire on them during a cash-in-transit robbery.
SBV South Africa – a company who ensure that money is delivered safely from each point – are offering a R1 million reward for anyone who can provide any information about the incident.
SBV confirmed the details of the shooting via a statement on their website. The incident took place at a shopping centre in Tsolo, just outside of Mthatha. Though the two guards were tragically murdered, the driver survived the attack.
They also confirmed that SAPS have now opened a case and will work closely with the security firm to bring these criminals to justice:
“SBV’s Risk and Compliance team is working closely with the SAPS to apprehend the suspects. SBV takes exception to loss of life and is offering a R1 million reward for information that leads to the successful arrest and conviction of the perpetrators involved in this attack. Counselling is being offered to colleagues and families to support them in this time of grief.”
There have been more than 160 cash-in-transit (CIT) heists reported in South Africa so far in 2018. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) has reported an increase in CIT heists this year compared to 2017.
Six months into the year and the industry has already suffered losses ranging between R1.1 and R1.4m in damaged or written off vehicles.
The company has offered R1m reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the murderers that took the lives of the security guards.
Our deepest sympathies to families & colleagues. Rest assured these criminals will be brought to justice.
