1 Violent Week For Private Security Officers

The past eight days has been extremely violent for those working in the private security field.
The week left three security officers dead, 2 others shot, two more stabbed and at least three fatal shootings by security officers who were defending themselves.
There were also two armored car robberies, nineteen security officers physically assaulted and an array of other violent encounters.
The week began with a store security officer working for Macy’s being stabbed by a shoplifter attempting to flee in Michigan.
Two security officers in California, and one in Florida were also murdered including a sworn park ranger law enforcement who was stabbed to death while working for a university public safety department.
Kansas City police say that they are still investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Friday near 24th Street and Van Brunt Boulevard where private security officers opened fire.
Security officers fatally shot a person Friday night during a disturbance outside a bar according to police. The shooting was reported shortly before 11 p.m. involving numerous persons and police say the security officers were not injured.
Baton Rouge Louisiana police say that one person is dead there and two others were taken to the hospital with injuries after a shooting outside a Baton Rouge business early Saturday morning.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reported Derrick Johnson, 40, died after getting shot by a security officer outside The Hookah Lounge on Florida Boulevard around 2:45 a.m.
Sgt. L’Jean Mckneely Jr. with BRPD said Johnson and others were led out of the lounge by security after being involved in a fight.
He added Johnson pulled out a handgun and tried to get back into the lounge. According to Mckneely, Johnson threatened the security officers with the gun when they tried to stop him from re-entering.
Mckneely said one of the security officers shot Johnson multiple times and he died at the scene.
He added the two-other people who were shot suffered injuries not considered life-threatening. The investigation is ongoing.
Police in Tampa, Houston and Detroit are also investigating shootings by security officers in their cities.
Tampa police said that a man was having a “foam” party at the Green Gator Bar and Grill, located near Anderson Road and Waters Avenue, with about 300 people in attendance. Around 1:10 a.m., two men were arguing in the parking lot when it escalated into a shooting between each other, deputies said. Both were injured. Security officers responded and became “engaged” in gunfire with the two men but it’s unclear if the two men who were injured shot each other, or if they were shot by security.
No charges have been filed, but deputies said there is still an ongoing investigation.
Authorities in Houston say a security officer opened fire on a group of men who attacked him after they refused to leave the basketball court at an apartment complex in southwest Houston.
According to police, the four men, who do not live at the complex, were repeatedly told to leave several times in the past because they were trespassing and the men beat him. The security guard allegedly pulled out his gun and fired. One of the men was shot. He’s recovering in the hospital from a graze wound. At this time, no charges have been filed against the security officer or the group.
Shots rang out in Indiana after a man trying to steal fireworks pulled a gun as a security officer tried to stop him. No one was injured and police have a description of the man and his pick-up truck.
Another security officer in Sioux Falls, Iowa had a knife pulled on him at a fireworks stand during a robbery and police have arrested a man in that crime. Court documents say that Kegan Morris, 29, of Walthill, Nebraska, went to a tented firework stand at the parking lot of on the 1700 block of Pierce Street in Sioux City just after midnight on Friday. Morris reportedly pulled out a knife, walked around the stand and asked the guard to give him free fireworks and tell the owners he had been robbed. The security guard again declined, and Morris told them that he was robbing them then. Officers found Morris a few blocks away with the stolen fireworks.
An off- duty police officer working security for yet another fireworks business was shot.
St. Charles County police officer is recovering after he was shot while on the job early Wednesday. According to St. Charles city police spokesman Sgt. Dave Horton, the county officer was working security at a fireworks tent in the 1400 block of South 5th Street when he confronted two suspects trying to steal items around 2:30 am.“One of the suspects fired at the county officers and grazed his upper body. The suspects fled the area,” he says. They remain at large. The unidentified officer was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.
North Brunswick NJ police reported that a late-night robbery Wednesday at a North Brunswick warehouse led to three arrests and the recovery of the merchandise, North Brunswick police said Thursday afternoon.
Armed with a handgun, the three men assaulted and held an unarmed security officer at gunpoint while they stole nearly $1 million worth of cosmetics from a commercial building on the 1600 block of Jersey Avenue, police Capt. Brian Hoiberg said. The security guard escaped and called police. Upon arriving at the scene, officers saw the suspects attempting to flee the building, township police said in a statement. One of them jumped into a box-style truck and headed northbound on Jersey Avenue. Officers pursued the vehicle until the suspect crashed it in New Brunswick, and police captured him when he tried to run away. The three men were charged with robbery, burglary, theft, possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and eluding. They are all in police custody
An armored truck in Sycamore Illinois was robbed at gunpoint by two men wearing masks. Both fled in a vehicle and have not been arrested.
Another armored truck was robbed in Houston Texas just a few days later. The security officers there were delivering money to a grocery store when they were ambushed.
The suspects rammed their vehicle, a white utility truck, with an extended cab and ladders on the top, into the security van. Three of the four suspects, two of whom were armed, got out of the truck to confront the female employee in the van.
One of the suspects struggled with the security guard, and the robbers took an undisclosed amount of money and a weapon from her before fleeing the scene in their vehicle.
Sherwood Wisconsin police report that a 29-year-old man was arrested Sunday, July 1, after he allegedly threatened a grocery store security guard with a gun.
Shorewood police were dispatched at about 9:46 p.m. to the Metro Market grocery store, 4075 N. Oakland Ave., on a report of a retail theft.
Shorewood police were told that the 29-year-old man was in a physical fight with the loss prevention officer. The man told the loss prevention officer that he had a gun, and then he pulled the gun out of his waistband and pointed it at the loss prevention officer, according to police.
The man was arrested, and the gun was recovered by Shorewood police. The man is in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail. No one was injured during the incident.
Houston TX police say that two men stole an ATM from a southwest Houston hotel Tuesday morning after threatening a security guard with handguns, police said. The men, wearing hoodies and masks, came to the Hilton in the 6700 block of Southwest Freeway, just south of Hillcroft, around 3 a.m.
When a security officer approached them, the burglars took out handguns and told the security guard to stay out of the way, said Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department.
They then took the ATM, put it in a silver Malibu and left the scene.
Houston police said that they still investigating this robbery.
NYPD officers assigned to the 78th precinct responded to an assault against a security guard and involving a 16-year-old boy. The teen fled after allegedly pulling a knife on a security officer at a Flatbush Avenue retailer. While police didn’t name the retailer, they did say that the armed teen threatened and brandished the weapon at the security officer who was inside the store near Atlantic Avenue at 4 pm when the teen attempted to assault him. Police caught up with the suspect after more than two weeks, and cuffed him on a menacing charge, cops said.
Queens security officer is recovering after being stabbed at a store late Thursday night. Police say two men fled with beer and when the security officer tried to stop them he was stabbed in the shoulder.
Security officers in two different states also found dead bodies.
In Portland Oregon a security officer on duty at a Goodwill store found a dead body behind a Goodwill building Friday morning, police said. The body was discovered near brush on the property in the 12200 block of Northeast Halsey Street. Officers say they consider the man’s death suspicious. They’re not sure how long the body had been there before the security officer found it. The death is being investigated as a homicide.
And in Santa Monica California, a man in his 40s with blunt force chest trauma was found dead Friday on a bench outside a Santa Monica hospital by security officers.
Detectives later arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder, a police lieutenant said.
The suspect was identified as Daniel Roy Davis, whose place of residence was not disclosed.
The unidentified victim’s body was found on the grounds of Providence St. John’s Health Center at 2121 Santa Monica Blvd. about 6:45 a.m. by hospital staff, who called police, SMPD Lt. Saul Rodriguez said.
Multiple other incidents of assaults and involving weapons were also reported during this time.
