Virginia Beach named safest metro city in America by security review company
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Aug 3 2018 The Resort City has been named the No. 1 safest metro city in the country by SafeWise, a company that specializes in home security reviews.
Virginia Beach moves up to the top spot after coming in at third place in the company’s review last year.
SafeWise compiles their list by looking at the number of violent crimes reported (murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery, etc.) per 1,000 people. The company used the most recent FBI crime statistics from 2016 for its review.
Cities had to have a population of more than 300,000 people to be considered, so no other Hampton Roads city qualified for either the “safest” or “most dangerous” lists.
Though the city has had some high-profile cases, including this year’s murder of Virginia Beach mother Bellamy Gamboa, your chance of falling victim to a violent crime in Virginia Beach (population 453,017) is 1.55 in 1,000, according to FBI data.
That’s nearly two points better than the second place city, Honolulu, Hawaii, which featured 3.35 violent crimes per 1,000 people. For perspective, the national median crime rate in the U.S. is 7.07 per 1,000 people.
Virginia Beach was joined in the top 5 by Honolulu, Lexington, Kentucky, Anaheim, California, and San Jose, California.
Virginia Beach was the only East Coast city in the top 10, which featured four California cities and two Texas cities.
Detroit, St. Louis, Memphis, Baltimore and Kansas City were in the top 5 for the company’s “most dangerous list.” Detroit, which ranked No.1, has a violent crime rate of 20.47 per 1,000 people.
