A permanent memorial placed at Centennial Olympic Park to honor Richard Jewell
ATLANTA GA Nov 11 2021 Security officer Richard Jewell, who was thrust into the public eye after the deadly Centennial Olympic Park bombing, was honored on Wednesday.
The Georgia World Congress Center hosted a dedication ceremony honoring Jewell and other law enforcement officers who responded to the terrorist attack.
The ceremony was conducted at the very park that Jewell found a suspicious backpack and notified police to assist him
Jewell led police to a suspicious bag and began evacuating people from the park.
Jewell was originally accused of the bombing but later found innocent.
The George Bureau of Investigations said during the ceremony that had it not been for Richard Jewell being alert and taking his job seriously that many more people would have been injured or killed on that day.
More than 25 years ago, Eric Robert Rudolph planted the bombs that killed 2 people and injured 11.
Jewell later served as a Georgia police office before his death in 2007.
A permanent memorial was placed at the park during the ceremony.
