Cullman AL Oct 22 2018 It’s not uncommon for those of us in the workforce, to look toward retirement. But there are people who love their jobs so much they could do them forever. We found one of those people up in Cullman.

Officer Jack Springer has worked for the Cullman Police Department for more than 50 years. He is well past retirement age. Despite that, he’s not ready to leave.

“I just enjoy doing it and I don’t really want to retire but sooner or later you’ve got to realize your time has come,” Springer said.

Born and raised in Cullman, Springer started with the department at 25 years old after leaving the U.S. Air Force. He has been married to his wife for more than 50 years. They have two sons. One of which is also a police officer and on track to retire before his dad does.

Over the years Springer has seen a lot change.

“When I first started they didn’t have any computers. They didn’t even do arrest reports. They had a jail card they filled out,” Springer said.

One thing that has remained the same for almost his entire career, is his role as a patrol officer. Police chief Kenny Culpepper, who Springer trained by the way, says beat cops see some of the worst of it. Violence and deaths. He says that’s one of the reasons many officers retire early.

“You think about being out on the street and all the things you have to deal with that’s remarkable to do it for 50 years,” Culpepper said.

For the past two years Springer has transitioned to the services department. A little slower pace. But he’s still happy to be here. Still not ready to go. And still enjoying every minute until he does.

“It’s been wonderful and that’s about all I can tell you,” Springer said.
