A local man was arrested after an altercation with a security guard and police officer early Sunday morning outside of a Garden City nightclub.
Freddy Suarez, 23, was booked into Weld County Jail on suspicion of one count each of misdemeanor third-degree assault and felony second-degree assault on a peace officer.
About 1:30 a.m., a security guard flagged down a Garden City police officer in the parking lot of the El Bandido nightclub, 618 25th St. Club security had detained Suarez after authorities say he assaulted security guard Cesar Chavez-Ramos, according to the affidavit for his arrest.
Chavez-Ramos attempted to escort Suarez out of the club for harassing a female patron, but he wouldn’t leave. Suarez elbowed Chavez-Ramos above his left eye, leaving a visible lump and red marks, the affidavit states.
The responding Garden City officer observed Suarez was intoxicated and agitated. After he was put in police handcuffs, Suarez began banging his face on the side of the officer’s vehicle. The officer took him to the ground to prevent injury, but Suarez started banging his head and face against the pavement. The officer then placed Suarez in the back of his vehicle.
While the officer was listening to Chavez-Ramos’ statement, Suarez started hitting his head against the bars of the window, and kicking the door and window of the vehicle. After being told multiple times to stop, Suarez was then hobbled for his own safety and to prevent damage to police equipment, according to the affidavit.
As the officer tried to immobilize his legs, Suarez kicked backwards and struck the police officer in the thigh, causing him to lose his balance and fall back into his vehicle, according to court records.
Suarez is out of custody on $2,000 bail. The deadline for the filing of formal charges by the Weld District Attorney’s Office is 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
