Ariz. Tribal Officer Killed, 2nd Officer Injured During Stop, Shootout
Whiteriver AZ June 4, 2022Â An Arizona tribal police officer was fatally shot in a shootout during a traffic stop that also left another officer wounded and a suspect dead Thursday.
The violent confrontation erupted when a White Mountain Apache police officer pulled over a driver in Whiteriver, KPNX-TV reports. An altercation broke out during the stop and the driver allegedly shot and killed the officer.
After the shooting, the suspect is accused of stealing the officer’s patrol vehicle and fleeing the scene. Police pursued the suspect, and the chase moved through remote parts of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
Finally, the suspect stopped, and a “gun battle” with police ensued. The suspect was shot and killed by police.
An officer was wounded during the shootout and was flown to a Phoenix-area hospital. No details were released concerning the officer’s conditions or the nature of the injuries.
The FBI is investigating the incident.
