Armed man shot to death by hospital security and police in Columbus
Westerville, Ohio April 14 2021– A man died inside the emergency department of the Mount Carmel St. Ann’s medical center Monday afternoon after being shot by two Columbus police officers and a hospital security officer.
Initially it was reported the suspect had exchanged gunfire with the officers, reports the Associated Press.
The suspect was at the hospital receiving medical treatment and had warrants out for his arrest for domestic violence and weapons charges, reports WBNS. His identity has not been released, pending family notification, reports the Columbus Dispatch.
No one else was injured during the ordeal.
Before the incident, the suspect had been found passed out inside a vehicle and was transported to the hospital. The Columbus Dispatch reports that medics helping the man were escorted by police to the emergency department. He was supposed to have a medical check up before being formally arrested and charged by the police.
Initially it was believed the suspect was able to either disarm an officer or pulled out his own gun and began exchanging gunfire with two law enforcement officers and a hospital security officer. However, an additional weapon recovered indicates the man may have had the gun he used on him when he was taken to the hospital.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
