Armed robbery of Virginia Walgreen’s ends in suicide
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. July 12 2017 — The standoff with an armed-robbery suspect ended in an apparent suicide Tuesday evening after the man barricaded himself for more than three hours inside the Walgreens on S Laburnum Avenue in Henrico’s East End.
Crime Insider sources tell CBS 6 that an armed man entered the store and jumped over the counter at the pharmacy, and at least one shot was fired. Sources say someone from the pharmacy drive thru witnessed the incident and called police.
At approximately 5:20 p.m., Henrico Police responded to the Walgreens pharmacy, located at 4845 S. Laburnum Avenue for an armed robbery. A SWAT team and K9 units also responded to the store.
Police say a single shot rang out inside the store and that’s when the suspect, described as a white male, barricaded himself inside back of the store. Police say all employees and customers were able to safely exit the store.
Police say they are still investigating if the suspect fired that shot in the air or at someone else.
“During negotiations, additional shots were fired by the suspect. He was later found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene,” said a Henrico Police spokesperson.
Police said no officers discharged their weapons during this incident.
Crime Insider sources say some of the suspect’s family members were on the scene.
Police are still investigating the incident.
