Armed security guard charged with murder
PORTLAND, Ore. April 28 2019 Willie Mitchell, the man accused in a fatal shooting outside a popular bar in Northwest Portland, has no criminal history, no mental health issues and was a security guard who recently was certified to carry a gun.
Mitchell, who turned 23 the day before the April 19 shooting, was arrested in Eugene on April 24. He’s accused of shooting Trayontay Jones outside of Shake Bar, 28 NW 4th Avenue around 1:20 a.m.
Court documents obtained by KOIN 6 News revealed Mitchell lives in Eugene with his girlfriend during the week and in Portland on the weekends with his dad.
That same court document said he is employed at both McKenzie Willamette in Portland and at Connect Farmers in Eugene, doing security for each and works about 60 hours a week.
However, an official at the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training told KOIN 6 News he worked for Premier Security in Eugene. He got his security certification to carry a gun — about 2 weeks before the shooting — and had been an unarmed security guard since March 2018.
An office manager at Premier Security told KOIN 6 News Mitchell worked part-time for the agency for about 6 months. During that period, he was assigned to do security for McKenzie Willamette in Springfield.
An employee at McKenzie Willamette told KOIN 6 News they do not have a facility in Portland.
Mitchell resigned from Premier Security about 2 months ago, and the office manager did not have any information where he went when he left the agency.
An office manager at Connect Farmers declined to provide any information about whether Mitchell worked for the marijuana company.
Mitchell, who told police he doesn’t know who Trayontay Jones is, now is charged with his murder and was arraigned Friday. Officials have not released any information about a motive.
Jones, 29, died at the scene.
The investigation continues. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Detective Billy Winters at 503.793.0466.
