Armed suspected thief loses gun during struggle-detained by security officers
SEATTLE WA August 28 2019 – A 25-year-old convicted felon is back in jail after he tried to steal items from a car and was tackled by the vehicle’s owners and nearby security officers, Seattle police said.
A stolen gun fell from the suspect’s waistband during the struggle.
The incident unfolded at around 5 p.m. Sunday when officers responded to a report of a robbery in the 1000 block of Spring Street, said Detective Mark Jamieson of the Seattle police.
The owners of the vehicle said they saw the suspect inside their parked car, stealing items from it. They confronted the suspect and a struggle ensued, with the suspect actively fighting to hang on to the stolen property.
Nearby security officers heard the commotion and rushed over to assist.
During the struggle, a 9mm handgun fell from the suspect’s waistband to the ground, Jamieson said.
The security officers were able to detain the suspect until officers arrived and arrested him.
A check of the suspect’s name showed that he is a convicted felon, and thereby legally prohibited from having a handgun. A check of the gun showed that it was reported as stolen, according to police.
The suspect was later booked into the King County Jail for investigation of robbery, felony gun charges and possession of a stolen firearm. The handgun was submitted into evidence.
