CHURCH HILL TN July 2 2018 — An “off duty” fireworks tent security officer armed with a handgun was arrested on charges of public intoxication and illegal gun possession Thursday after he was reported for harassing a nearby fireworks competitor and then urinated on himself twice.

Around 10:10 p.m., Church Hill Police Department Detective Ethan Mays responded to the Wild Wilma’s Fireworks tent on Richmond Street in the Church Hill Shopping Center on a complaint of an intoxicated male with a handgun.

Daniel Euin Williams, 34, 3817 Busbee St., Kingsport, had reportedly been yelling at the operator of a nearby fireworks tent and at one point allegedly went to the competitor’s location.

Mays said Williams smelled of alcohol and had a 9mm semiautomatic Smith and Wesson pistol holstered on his hip with a fully loaded clip and a round chambered.

While he was speaking to Williams, Mays reportedly observed him urinate on himself.

Mays said he expressed concerns to Williams about being intoxicated and armed while operating a fireworks tent.

Williams replied that he was off duty and was providing security.

Mays confiscated Williams’ handgun, but Williams wasn’t arrested until after Assistant CHPD Chief Roddy Miller, who had also responded to Wild Wilma’s, reportedly observed Williams urinate on himself again.

Williams was then asked to perform field sobriety tests, which he allegedly performed poorly. Williams claimed he had had one beer and one muscle relaxer, which he was prescribed due to previous neck and back surgeries.

Aside from public intoxication, Williams was charged with possession of a handgun by an intoxicated person.

Williams was being held in the Hawkins County Jail without bond pending arraignment Monday in Sessions Court.

CHPD Chief Mark Johnson said he had spoken to the Wild Wilma’s tent’s owner, who stated that he has a strict policy against alcohol use by staff and that Williams won’t be back at that location.
