Armored Car Driver Faces Federal Charges in Cheyenne ATM Theft
Cheyenne WY June 22 2014 A 26-year-old Cheyenne man is facing federal charges after allegedly stealing more than $150,000 from an ATM.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the U.S. District Court of Wyoming yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, Laramie County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an ATM alarm at the Wells Fargo at 3600 E. Pershing Blvd. shortly before midnight on June 15.
Deputies found the ATM hood and vault door open as well as a black piece of tape over the camera, but there was no damage to the ATM itself.
A detective learned that two Garda employees, an armored car service which loads U.S. currency into ATMs, serviced the machine on June 15. A “lockout report” from Garda showed one of the employees, David Netterfield, never secured the vault lock after servicing the ATM.
Video from security cameras mounted on the bank also showed a man, who appeared to be Netterfield, walk up to the ATM, access the machine and carry off the money cartridges.
Netterfield was interviewed on June 16 and reportedly confessed to breaking into the ATM. He said he’d been skimming money from the ATM and estimated he had taken $41,000. He also reportedly admitted to taking $18,000 from Wells Fargo and Walmart ATMs in Laramie.
Netterfield said he knew he couldn’t repay the money he’d taken, so he decided to stage a break-in on the ATM at the Wells Fargo in Cheyenne. He said he put the cash in a backpack, drove to the Garda office and placed the backpack in an armored truck.
Sheriff’s officials accompanied Netterfield to Laramie, where the backpack containing $112,180 was recovered.
Netterfield’s plan was to replace the money he’d taken from the two ATMs in Laramie and keep the rest “for a rainy day.”
